Error: "params.ini is unwritable"

"params.ini is unwritable"

When editing a template in Joomla, you may see this message show up.  This will occur if the FTP settings are not enabled in your Joomla admin under Global Configuration.

If the FTP setting is not enabled in Joomla, then Joomla is programmed to reset the permissions on the file back to 555 (as determined in administrator/components/com_templates/controller.php ).

So to correct your issue, you'll need to:

1) Enable the FTP settings under Global Configuration > Server.

  • Check "Enable FTP"
  • Leave ftp host as "localhost".  Enter your ftp username and password.
  • FTP Root = the folder where you installed Joomla relative to your domain.  For example, if you installed it in your domain's main folder, then it would be "yourdomain.com".  If you installed it in a subfolder, for example, hp_joomla, then it would be "yourdomain.com/hp_joomla".

2) Change the permissions on your params.ini file to 777 or rwxrwxrwx.    This can be done with an ftp program, or with the FileManger program in your hosting account.

This issue is explained in the Joomla and Rockettheme forums.

http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p=1367709

http://www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=21&t=98365&rb_v=viewtopic

Note: Although the rockettheme forum post suggests changing the line in controller.php from 555 to 777 , that is not necessary unless the FTP setting is off.  However, you should never make any changes to the core Joomla files unless absolutely necessary.
